Summer is right around the corner, and if you are in a relationship, it may be time to start thinking about if you really want to continue it through the hot, sunny season. Here are the pros and cons of having a significant other during the Summer:
Pros-
A reason to travel
Since you’re in college, there is a very good chance that your significant other is not from your hometown. It doesn’t matter if they are from the town over from you, or the opposite side of the country, visiting them will give you a reason to change your scenery. You can plan fun trips out, or meet halfway, and Summer gives you plenty of time to figure these out.
Consistent decent sex
If you both stay on campus during the Summer, this gives you a ridiculous amount of time to smash. Even if you both go home, you will probably see each other a good amount, and sex with your significant other is typically better than a random drunken hookup. Plus, everyone thinks being single in Summer will lead to endless boning, and usually you end up hooking up once with a solid 4.
Sharing fun experiences with someone
Summer is filled with a ton of experiences that are fun to share with someone else. Whether it is a trip like a weekend getaway, or heading to the beach to booze all day, having a significant other to do it with can be a ton of fun. Plus, it is guaranteed sex afterwards, so you don’t have to put in as much effort.
Cons-
Can’t have summer flings
In the hot summer sun, people are wearing less clothing and this undeniably turns up the sexual tension between people. You can see bodies more, you may be on a trip where you never see the person again, and you haven’t gotten laid in a couple weeks. Thus arises the perfect opportunity for a Summer fling. You both know it will only last the Summer so there aren’t any strings attached, and you can just let go and have some fun. Maybe you are home for the Summer and that ugly duckling in high school suddenly became a smoke show, and you just have to have them. Being in a relationship makes this quite a bit harder to accomplish.
Can’t experience Summer to the fullest
Summer is a perfect time to catch up with old friends and do crazy things you normally wouldn’t do without them. Having someone that calls you theirs, can really hold you back from this. No matter how non-jealous someone says they are, there are going to be times when they are not going to want you to do certain things for fear of the relationship. Maybe it’s a road trip with the boys to Myrtle Beach for the weekend, or a girls weekend in Vegas, having a relationship can certainly hold you back from certain Summer experiences.
Obligations that take up time
Summer is a time for a lot of boring obligations, such as family gatherings. Being with someone during the Summer causes you to get dragged to these. You don’t even want to go to your grandmother’s 83rd birthday, never mind your girlfriend’s where you don’t know a soul and are forced to make awkward conversation with her slow aunt about her favorite kind of chips. Having a significant other causes you to have to attend these events to please them, and sometimes it is just not worth it. Especially when you could be getting smashed with the boys hitting on tan girls in sundresses that are open to talk to you because they know they will probably never have to see you again.
